We won’t raise their wages, but we will let them take a few fries.
Tony Xu, Cofounder of Doordash
Among record-high inflation, gig economy drivers are feeling the pinch of high prices, stagnant wages and expensive fuel. To help, Doordash is pilot testing a new program that will allow their drivers to take a little pinch themselves of whatever food they’re delivering.
“Obviously, we’re not going to raise wages or anything like that,” said Doordash CEO Tony Xu. “Our shareholders can be assured of that. But what we can do is offload the cost of inflation onto customers by allowing drivers to take just one bite of their food. They’re still getting exactly what they ordered, just a little bit less. What are they going to do, drive to the restaurant themselves?”
“It’s just one bite,” Xu continued. “Who would be that stingy to deny them that? These drivers are struggling! They’re not being paid enough for what they do, and God knows they could use just a little nibble to get them through to the next pickup.”
In response, Doordash drivers criticized the new policy on Twitter as meaningless. “Classic billionaire move. This is beyond unhelpful. I’d much rather get a raise,” wrote user @mangatron8834. “I’ve been eating people’s fries for years, so this changes nothing for me,” agreed another driver. “This is making me hungry fam,” wrote a third. “Gonna take a bite of this hamburger rn lol”
