How are we supposed to get into the spirit if all we’ve got is the soundtrack to The Nightmare Before Christmas and Halloweentown?
Okay, hear me out– why doesn’t Halloween have any good music? When people say “holiday music” they’re only talking about one specific holiday. That’s discrimination. I want Halloween carols and I want them now!
Even cycling instructors have a hard time filling out a good Halloween playlist. I know, because I went to a spin class this morning, and do you know what Tasha played? Disturbia, Monster Mash, Werewolf Bar Mitzvah from that one episode of 30 Rock, Thriller, the Heffalumps and Woozles song from the 1977 Winnie the Pooh movie, Disturbia one more time, and then the rest of the hour was just spooky sounds of like, creaky doors and stuff. Do you know how hard it is to keep your heart rate up to the ambient sound of bats taking flight?
I know what I want, and what I want is Halloween carols! I want a radio station to be able to fill a whole month’s worth of appropriate October music. I want neighbors to come by and sing the songs of the season to me before handing me a loaf of pumpkin bread. I want Spotify to be able to suggest something new to me that isn’t on the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack.
I’m just a girl, standing in front of everyone who makes music– from the homespun bards to the powerful music record industry– please. Sing me a song of Halloween that will capture the joy of the season, one that will stand the test of time. I don’t think that’s too much to ask!!
