It’s hard to know when everyone who works there just repeatedly says, the benefits are great, you should apply.
Imagine a place where everyone arrives with a smile on their face. A place where employees who work in a giant warehouse are given health benefits that include fertility assistance. A place where soaring inflation outside has not touched the price of a hot dog and soda combo inside. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?
Now imagine a place with no windows. A place where only those designated as “members” are allowed inside, with people monitoring the entrance and exits at all times. A place where getting a hot dog and soda combo for only $1.50 seems a little good to be true, like it must be a distraction from what’s really going on behind the counter.
If you’ve ever set foot in a Costco, you know that both of these descriptions are the same place. (Costco.) Though others may be too afraid to find the truth about the great bulk superstore, I must ask the essential question: Is Costco a cult???
It’s hard to know when everyone who works there insists, “It’s such a great place to work! The benefits here are better than my cousin gets, and he works in tech! You should apply!” On the one hand, that is exactly what someone who was treated well by their employer would say. On the other hand, it’s exactly what someone would say if Costco was a cult and they were part of that cult. I don’t know whether to stage an intervention or fill out a job application.
If you have any information on whether or not Costco is a cult, please leave it in the comments below!
